How I Solved My Morning Routine: Focus on Survival, Not Self-Improvement

I’ve followed the same morning routine my whole life. It’s called “wake up late and get ready in a panic.” And even though I now work from home and sleep 20-odd feet from my workplace, I still can’t manage to get out of this habit.

I desperately wish that I had a morning routine to help me start my day on the right track. But all the mainstream advice is based on self-improvement. Meditate. Exercise. Read a book. I can barely wake up 10 minutes before work. How the heck am I going to go for a run and gratitude journal before 8 am?!?

Typical morning routines are so focused on self-improvement that they entirely miss the simple tasks humans need to function. You can’t build a house on shaky ground. So, I’ve devised a morning routine based on body, mind, and spiritual needs rather than wants.

Step 1: Identify needs for your body, mind, and spirit

To set yourself up for a productive day, make sure that your body, mind, and spiritual needs are met. I’m talking literal needs like food, water, and shelter. I started by reflecting on where I already spent my time. For example, I already watered my plants and ate breakfast.
